How Energy Efficient Windows Can Lower Your Bills

One of the important home upgrades that many people overlook is window insulation. Windows can account for up to 30% of a home’s energy loss, making them a significant factor in energy efficiency. Proper window insulation can significantly reduce energy loss and improve the comfort of your home. In this article, we will explore the importance of window insulation, the benefits of properly insulated windows, and why homeowners should upgrade their window insulation.

What is Window Insulation?

Window insulation refers to the materials and techniques used to minimize heat transfer between the interior and exterior of a building through the windows. This is important because windows can be a significant source of heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer, leading to higher energy bills and decreased comfort.

The Different Types Of Insulation

The options below have benefits and drawbacks, and the best choice for your home will depend on factors such as your budget, climate, and existing windows.

Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is a flexible material that seals gaps around windows to prevent air infiltration. It is typically made of rubber, foam, or plastic and is easy to install.

Caulking

Caulking is a material used to seal gaps between window frames and walls, as well as between the glass and frame. It is available in different types, including silicone, latex, and polyurethane.

Window films

Window films are transparent sheets that can be applied to the inside of windows to reduce heat gain and glare. They are available in different types, including reflective, tinted, and low-emissivity.

Double-pane windows

Double pane windows have two panes of glass separated by a layer of air or gas. They are more energy-efficient than single-pane windows and can reduce outside noise.

Triple-pane windows

Triple-pane windows have three panes of glass separated by two layers of air or gas. They are the most energy-efficient type of window insulation and can provide significant savings on energy bills. However, they are also the most expensive option.

How To Tell That Your Windows Need Upgraded Insulation

If you suspect that your windows are not adequately insulated, here are five signs to look out for:

  • Drafts: If you feel cold air coming through your windows, it’s a clear indication that they are not adequately insulated. Drafts can occur around the window frame or glass.
  • High Energy Bills: If you notice a sudden spike in your energy bills, it could be due to poor insulation around your windows. This is because heat can escape or enter your home through your windows, leading to increased heating or cooling costs.
  • Moisture and Condensation: Condensation on your windows could indicate that your windows are not adequately insulated. Moisture on the windows can cause damage to the frames and sills and can lead to mold growth.
  • Cold Glass: If you touch the inside of your window, and it feels cold to the touch, it’s an indication that the glass is not well insulated. This happens when the outside temperature is colder than the indoor temperature.
  • Outside Noise: If you can hear a lot of noise from outside, it could be an indication that your windows are not adequately insulated. Insulated windows can help to reduce the amount of outside noise that enters your home.

Window insulation can lead to significant energy savings. Up to 30% of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. By upgrading your window insulation, you can reduce this energy loss and lower your utility bills.

Tips For Homeowners

As a homeowner, there are several things you can do to increase the energy efficiency of your windows.

  • Use window coverings: You can use curtains or blinds to reduce heat gain in the summer by blocking out the sun. They can also help you reduce heat loss in the winter as well!
  • Create a cross-breeze: To help reduce energy consumption, you can open windows on opposite sides of the house to create a cross breeze instead of turning on the air conditioning on moderately temperature days.
  • Install exterior shading devices: Awnings or shades on the outside of your home can help to keep your home cooler in the summer.
  • Don’t wait: The longer you wait to have energy-efficient upgrades to your home, the more unnecessary money you’re throwing out the window (pun intended). Get your home’s energy assessment scheduled today to start seeing those savings sooner, rather than later.
  • Apply for those rebates: The Canadian Government is offering homeowners grants and rebates to make their homes more energy efficient, so there is no better time to upgrade your window insulation! The Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) is offering a rebate of up to $10,000 for energy upgrades to homes.

Benefits of Having Properly Insulated Windows

  • Lower energy bills: Properly insulated windows can significantly reduce energy loss. By reducing heat transfer through your windows, you can lower your heating and cooling costs and save money on your utility bills.
  • Increased comfort: Properly insulated windows can help maintain a consistent indoor temperature, reducing drafts and hot spots and making your home more comfortable throughout the year.
  • Reduced noise: Insulated windows can help reduce noise pollution from outside, making your home a more peaceful and quiet place to live.
  • Improved indoor air quality: Insulated windows can help prevent air leaks, reducing the amount of dust, pollen, and other pollutants that enter your home.
  • Increased home value: Upgrading your window insulation can increase the value of your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers when you decide to sell in the future.
